Public emergency rooms will treat you without requiring immediate payment. If you are not in the public health system, you’ll receive a bill that you can send to your insurance provider. EU citizens with an EHIC card are covered for public care.

Private emergency rooms require private insurance or payment.

The public system - CAPs

The public health service in Catalonia is called CatSalut. Services are generally free or low-cost if you have a health card (tarjeta sanitaria).

Public health centres are called Centros de Atención Primaria (CAPs), A CAP is the first place to go when you have a health problem.

You can spot pharmacies by a red or green lit-up cross outside.

Pharmacies are usually open:

• Monday to Friday from 9 AM. to 1 PM and 4:30 PM to 8 PM
• Saturdays from 9 AM to 1:30 PM.
