Public emergency rooms will treat you without requiring immediate payment. If you are not in the public health system, you’ll receive a bill that you can send to your insurance provider. EU citizens with an EHIC card are covered for public care.

The public system - CAPs

The public health service in Catalonia is called CatSalut. Services are generally free or low-cost if you have a health card (tarjeta sanitaria).

Public health centres are called Centros de Atención Primaria (CAPs), A CAP is the first place to go when you have a health problem.[1]

Pharmacies are usually open:

  • Monday to Friday from 9 AM. to 1 PM and 4:30 PM to 8 PM[3]
  • Saturdays from 9 AM to 1:30 PM. [4]

If you need a pharmacy outside these hours, check the list of open pharmacies at https://www.cofgi.org/farmacies/farmacies-de-guardia. The list is also on the door of every pharmacy.[5] There is always at least one Farmàcia de Guàrdia open.[6]
