In some areas of Girona, smart bins are used to manage waste.

Waste sorting

In some areas of Girona, smart bins are used to manage waste. These include:

  • Organic waste goes in the brown bin and must be placed in a compostable bag.
  • A grey multi-material bin is used for different waste types depending on the day (e.g. paper/cardboard, packaging, glass, or general waste )
  • Some areas also provide a small bin for sanitary waste (e.g. pads, diapers, masks)
  • Used cooking oil must be taken to a recycling center. Mobile recycling units are available by neighborhood: Mobile unit calendar

To check where specific items go, use the Catalan Government’s tool: residuonvas.cat More info: residus.gencat.cat

Cards

Bin card

A card is needed to open the bins. Tap your card on the bin and you should hear a click, indicating the bin has unlocked.

If your bin doesn’t open:

  • Test your card on another bin to rule out card vs bin error.
  • If the card fails, visit the OSGRE office with your ID or waste tax document to get a replacement.
  • If the bin is faulty, report it to OSGRE.

Lost cards can also be replaced at OSGRE:

When moving homes, return your current card. It is linked to the address, not the individual. Request a new card for your new residence at OSGRE.

Your card gives you access to:

  • All smart bins in Girona (regardless of neighborhood)
  • Temporary waste areas
  • Emergency disposal points
  • Recycling centers

Usage rules and schedules

Smart bins are accessible between 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM daily.

All bins follow a common collection calendar, available here: Collection calendar PDF

Bin limitations and alternatives

If a bin is full, use the next nearest bin location. If your waste doesn't fit:

  • Flatten items like boxes or packaging.
  • Bring oversized waste to the recycling center.

Small garden waste (e.g. leaves or flowers) can go in the brown bin. Large garden waste (e.g. branches or trunks) must go to the recycling center.
