Getting around Girona

Girona doesn't have a metro or tram, just bus services. You can also use the city's bike rental scheme Girocleta to cycle around, or you can see the city just by walking.

Buses

Girona has 10 local bus routes.[1] City buses are generally on time. You can pay with cash or by tapping your bank card.

See bus routes at https://web2.girona.cat/tmg/cat/bus_linies.php

The easiest way to plan a bus trip is with Google Maps: https://www.google.es/maps

Girocleta

Girocleta bikes

Girocleta is Girona’s shared bicycle scheme

  • Girocleta costs €2 per day (with a deposit of €150) or €30 per year.
  • Bikes can be used for 30 minutes at a time before incurring an additional fee of €0.50 per extra 30 minutes.

Real-time map of Gironacleta stations: https://www.girocleta.cat/mapaestacions.aspx

Sign up online at https://www.girocleta.cat.

To take a bike, you go to the screen, enter the code you received by email, and select the bike you want to rent. Then remove the bike.[2]

Taxis

There is no Uber or similar ride-sharing app in Girona. A taxi company called GiTaxi offers pre-booking services.

Driving

Parking in Girona: Car parks are typically underground. Free parking is available near Parc del Migdia (where?) and the roundabout near La Devesa (between the rivers).

Travelling outside Girona

Coaches

The coach station ("Estació d'Autobusos de Girona") is underground, at Plaça Espanya.

Coach tickets are easier to buy at the coach station ticket booths rather than online.

Coach timetables are printed and stuck to the wall next to the ticket booths.

Trains

Girona has two train stations:

  • Above-ground station (for slow regional trains).
  • Underground station (for the high-speed train, and it's also where the coach station is located).

It's best to check train routes in person.

Bono Recurrente (Recurrent Travel Ticket) Refunds:

  • Refunds start after the 15th of the month.
  • Cash payments require presenting the ticket and providing a bank account number.
  • Card payments are refunded automatically.

Driving

For ride-sharing, try asking on the Girona Costa Brava Expats International Facebook group.

Car rentals: A company called Som Mobilitat has six electric car-sharing vehicles in Girona. See Som Mobilitat (electric rental cars).

Girona airport

Girona has an airport, it's called Girona-Costa Brava Airport. It's about 10 km from the city.

Getting from Girona airport to Girona

Just arrived? There are two ways to get from Girona airport to Girona.

Taxi. A taxi from Girona Airport to Girona is €25–30. The taxi rank is just outside the arrivals terminal. Often, there'll be a queue.

Tip: Ask people in the queue if they're also going to Girona and if they want to share a taxi with you. That way you can split the taxi cost with other people.

Bus. There's a bus that goes from Girona Airport to Girona city centre, it costs around 2 euro.

Getting from Girona to Girona airport

Leaving Girona so soon?

Taxi. A taxi from Girona to Girona Airport is €25–30. (Where do you get taxis?)

Bus. There's a bus that goes straight to the airport, the journey is around 30 minutes. It starts at Girona coach station (Estación d'Autobuses de Girona).

Sagalés Bus Service connects Girona with the airport, departing from the post office area. An app is available for schedules and ticket purchases.

Barcelona airport

The next nearest airport to Girona is Barcelona airport. If you've just landed in Barcelona, there are three ways to get to Girona: bus, train, or taxi.

Taxi is easiest, but it costs around €150, so not affordable for most people.

Bus

Barcelona has 2 terminals. Buses leave from terminal 1 which take you to Girona bus station. They leave from bus station platform 10, 11 or 12.

According to Google Maps, the buses that go direct from the airport to Girona are the 602 and 603. They're run by a company called Sagalés AirportLine. Times are on the Sagales website.

Train

There are two trains to get – from one the airport to Barcelona Sants train station, and then antoher from Barcelona Sants train station to Girona train station.

Part 1: Train from Barcelona airport to Barcelona Sants train station

When you arrive at Barcelona airport and you’ve gotten through passport control, look for this sign:

It’s the sign for the shuttle bus that goes between terminals.

Get on that bus and get off at T2B (terminal 2B)

Then look for this sign:

It’s for the train to Barcelona Sants

So follow that sign to the airport train station, then buy a ticket at the machines to Barcelona Sants

By the way, don’t follow this sign as it’s for the metro. Not the same thing as the train.

Part 2: Train from Barcelona Sants train station to Girona

Once at Barcelona Sants, you can buy a ticket for the train to Girona train station

The trains from Barcelona to Girona can be confusing though, because there's two types: the slow trains (which take about 1.5 hours) and the fast trains (which take 40 minutes). You want to get a fast train if possible

to get a ticket for the fast train, look for the ticket booths that have "Larga Distancia" above them. That means "long distance". The booths for the slow train have "Media Distancia" above them, which means "medium distance"

Another option is to take a taxi from the airport to Barcelona Sants train station. It takes 10 minutes and cost around €25.

And you could get one from the terminal you arrive in, Terminal 1<footer><a></a></footer>
