Churches in Girona
Girona Cathedral[edit]
The Cathedral of Saint Mary, better known as Girona Cathedral, sits at the highest point in the city[1] and is Girona's most iconic landmark. It was used in Game of Thrones as the Great Sept of Baelor, where it exploded.
The staircase leading to the cathedral has 90 steps.[2] Children are told that no one knows the real number of steps because the number always changes every time someone counts them.[3]
Every guidebook about Girona says Girona Cathedral has the "widest gothic nave in the world". It is also the second widest nave in the world, after St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.[2] But what is a nave? And what is a gothic nave? Who knows? And who cares?
Construction of the cathedral spanned several centuries, creating mixed styles:[2]
- Romanesque remains (11th century): Tower of Charlemagne, cloister, sacristy
- Gothic main structure (14th–18th centuries)
- Baroque/Classical façade (begun 1606, finished much later)
At the top of the tower is a statue of an angel, Saint Michael. The tower has six bells. How many bells are in the Cathedral tower?
Every Sunday at 11 AM is the Missa (Mass),[4] which anyone can attend for free. The Mass is mainly for worshippers, though visitors and tourist are welcome if they are respectful.
Inside, the Cathedral Treasury preserves major medieval treasures. There are two especially important works in the Cathedral Treasury:[2]
- Tapestry of the Creation: A rare surviving Romanesque textile.[2]
- Beatus of Girona: a 10th-century manuscript of the Commentary on the Apocalypse.[2]
